The South African Property Association (SAPOA) annually honours property innovators, developers, owners, and built environment professionals who have made a significant contribution to the enhancement of the property industry at the SAPOA International Property Convention & Exhibition

This year marked the 46thanniversary of the convention and featured a host of respected industry professionals who formed part of a panel of expert judges.

“We once again had the privilege of showcasing the outstanding contributions from world-class owners, developers and built environment professionals which have significantly enhanced the industry,” said Pieter Engelbrecht, SAPOA Innovative Excellence Awards Chairman (SAPOA Awards Publication).

This year, Aurecon is proud to have been part of the project teams of threeaward-winning projects and a total of five category awards:

Newtown Junction

Mixed-use Development Winner, Overall Transformation Award Winner and Overall Winner

Newtown Junction walked away a winner of the Mixed-use Development category, Overall Transformation award and the Overall Winner. Developed by Atterbury Property developments and designed by DHK Architects, MRA Architects and LPA Architects, Newtown Junction is a unique and bustling hub that brings new life to the surrounding precinct. Coupled to this, the heritage-inspired design makes it a go-to destination for the people of Johannesburg as well as tourists.

Aurecon played the role of structural engineer on this landmark project, bringing to the table a wealth of knowledge around the complexities of working in the Johannesburg Central Business District environment as well as the ability to ramp up significant project resources at short notice.

West Hills Mall

International Development Award Winner

West Hills Mall in Accra, Ghana, is currently the largest purpose-built mall in Africa, offering about 26 000m² of tenant space. Developed by Delico Property Investments and expertly designed by ARC Architects, the mall’s design incorporates Ghanian Adinkra tribal symbolism in elements such as the piercing entrances and the collection of louvres that make up the simplistic, yet striking, façade.

Aurecon was responsible for providing civil engineering and building services on the project, as well as undertaking the design of an intersection off the Cape Coastal Highway to facilitate uninterrupted traffic access to the mall.

Drostdy Hotel

Overall Heritage Award Winner

The Drostdy Hotel in Graaff-Reinetis the second oldest hotel in South Africa and is situated in the historic centre of this Eastern Capetown.

The existing hotel had become dilapidated and was bought and then closed by Remgro. The site itself contains a number of heritage buildings that restricts modification and does not permit demolition.

Aurecon provided structural, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering services on the project, which saw the historic hotelturned into a 48-room luxury hotel featuring a clean, urban design that still preserves the nostalgic elements of the original building.

“We are extremely proud to have been involved in these threestellar projects and privileged to be able to partner with leading property developers and project teams. It is extremely gratifying that our innovative solutions for our clients have been honoured at the highest level with the achievement of these awards,” comments Ermis Marques, Aurecon’s Property Industry Director.
