The Lagos Government has put several local councils on alert over a possible outbreak of Lassa fever in the state, Punch reports.

Following the confirmation of a fresh case of the disease, the Lagos Government sprung into action, ordering that health centres and other traditional health institutions monitor the situation closely.

Thirty-two people have been placed under surveillance in Delta State after news made the rounds that a doctor had succumbed to the deadly disease.

In addition, the Federal Government confirmed that it was monitoring a total of fifty-seven people who might have made contact with the victim in both the Delta and Anambra States.

“The measure is routine. There is no Lassa fever case in the state. But it is better to be safe than sorry. We don’t expect any surprise from the councils,” stated an official from the Lagos Government, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, also confirmed that there was no Lassa fever case in the state.

“However, we are in touch with Delta State and monitoring the situation there.

“Meanwhile, we have activated our surveillance system in all LGAs, sent fact sheets to all health facilities and impressed on them to also increase their level of preparedness, as well as adopt standard infection control precautions.

“Public enlightenment will commence as soon as we get the necessary approval for funds,” Ayorinde added.
