President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the donation of 20 brand new Hilux vans to Burkina Faso towards West-African country’s October general elections.
The vans were delivered to the country on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bulus Lolo on behalf of Nigeria, and were received by the President, Commission Electorate Nationale Independent of Burkina Faso, Barthemy Kere.
Bulus Lolo who represented President Buhari remarked that the gesture was a demonstration of Nigeria’s solidarity with Burkina Faso.
“The gesture is to demonstrate to the people of Burkina Faso that Nigeria is solidly behind them. No matter how difficult it is, democracy brings the expression and the will of the people to bear in governance.
“If it worked in Nigeria, it can work in Burkina Faso. It is important to include all the stakeholders, respect the rule of law, allow the electorate to cast their votes and let the votes count.
“All these will lead to the success of the elections,” he added.
While receiving the donation on behalf of Burkina Faso, Kere commended Nigeria adding that the vehicles came at the right time.
Kere remarked that Nigeria was the first and the only African country to assist in the country’s electoral conduct through the vehicle donation.
“The availability of 20 brand new vehicles for the conduct of the October elections is very crucial and important to us. We appreciate the solidarity and support by Nigeria; Nigeria is the only African country that has so far provided assistance in this regard.
“We really need the vehicles to contribute to the success of our elections,’ he said.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Lolo was accompanied by Alhaji Ismaila Aliyu, his counterpart in the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Ambassador to Bukina Faso, David Bala.
