There are indications that President Buhari will confirm the appointment of Amina Zakari as the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman. Mrs. Zakari’s appointment as the commission’s acting boss raised concerns by the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, who claimed her alleged family ties with the president will result in conflict of interest. With the latest news report of her imminent confirmation as the substantive chairman of the electoral body, speculations surrounding the position have been put to rest.
A source confirmed the news, stating that it was president Buhari’s intention to speed up the process ahead of the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections to ensure the commission’s preparedness. The source speaking to The Punch added that once the appointment was ratified, previously vacant positions of national commissioners will also be filled. “It is almost certain that the President will soon confirm Mrs. Zakari’s appointment,” the source revealed, concluding that Zakari will be made the new INEC chairman soon.
It will be recalled that Buhari appointed Zakari as the acting chairman of INEC on June 30 following Prof. Attahiru Jega’s retirement. Before her appointment, she was an INEC National Commissioner.
