Without a public announcement that it would happen, Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza was sworn in for a third term amid political turmoil in which more than 100 people have died and tens of thousands have fled the country.
Nkurunziza was sworn in on Thursday. He won elections last month which the U.S. and U.K. said lacked credibility because of intimidation of the opposition and a clampdown on independent media
Burundi has been rocked by turmoil since the April announcement of Nkurunziza’s candidacy that many said violated the Constitution and a peace accord that ended Burundi’s civil war. Weeks of protests against Nkurunziza third-term bid boiled over mid-May when a section of the military attempted a coup that was quickly put down by the president’s loyalists.
