TheSheetTV and Thesheet.ng in partnership with the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Data Science Nigeria is calling for applications for a 2 Day Deep Tech Training for Journalists, Active Citizens, Social Media Influencers and Civil Society on ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE MEDIA: How Deep Tech Can Disrupt the Impact of Fake News on Peace and National Cohesion in Nigeria’s 2019 General Elections – September 27th and 28th 2018.

In a “post truth” era where the dissemination of Fake News and propaganda by the media, citizens and online bots have become one of the biggest threats to the continuous existence of democracy, it is imperative that journalists, being the ‘watch dog’ of society, arm themselves with the prerequisite knowledge and skills to keep up with the latest technology in order to be able to combat the scourge.

In addition, the spread of inaccurate information via social media and other sources have coincided with a massive transition in the news industry with Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Internet of Things and Data Science becoming more prominent in news detection, news gathering and news dissemination process.

Our inspiration and justification for organizing this important training is that Fake News has become a major impediment to the practice of Ethical Journalism in the world today and in Nigeria, the proliferation of Fake News and the spread of inaccurate information via social media and other sources is perhaps the biggest singular impediment to the continuous peaceful co-existence of the Nigerian people since the end of the Civil War given how the phenomenon has further led to the widening of the national fault lines.

The 2-day Training that will involve discussions and trainings of 75 selected journalists from both the Traditional and Online Media. The Training Facilitators will teach journalists and editors how to use Artificial Intelligence to analyse news for sentiments and authenticity – it will also include Deep Learning Simulation Sessions for the participating Journalists where Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Internet of Things and Data Science Experts will show them how these new Deep Tech Areas apply to and can advance Journalism.

We will cover all costs of feeding and workshop materials for the 2 Day Workshop. Participants will have to cover the costs of their Transportation to and from the Workshop Venue. All participants who participate in and complete the 2-day Workshop will receive Certificates.

This Call for Applications is open from September 7th till September 21st 2018.
