Jose Mourinho has told Paul Pogba he must put emotion to one side tonight when he makes his first return to former club Juventus.
Pogba, who rejoined Manchester United for £89million in 2016, makes his first return to Juventus in tonight’s Group H Champions League clash in Turin.
United boss Mourinho admitted midfielder Pogba will find it emotional, but said he must follow the example of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the consummate professional on his latest return to Old Trafford.
Ronado, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer for £99m, set up the only goal in his side’s 1-0 win at United a fortnight ago, and Mourinho has urged Pogba to follow his example.
“But then, it’s football and he’s wearing a United shirt with the United crest and he has to fight for it.”
Mourinho lavished praise on the experienced Juventus centre-back pairing of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardi Bonucci, whom United were unable to get past in the game at Old Trafford.
And the United boss admitted his players will find it just as hard to breach the Juventus defence tonight at the Allianz Stadium, a ground where they have shipped just four goals all season.
“It’s not easy, it’s not easy,” Mourinho told MUTV. “They have the quality, the know-how, the confidence – they have absolutely everything.
“I analyse them in many different circumstances. Even with one player less [after Ronaldo’s red card] against Valencia, they were very, very comfortable defensively.
“I’ve coached in Italy and know the strength of the Italian teams and the Italian players in the way they approach matches defensively, so it’s not easy.
“But we have talented players in attack, we have creative players who can give them problems too.
“I think the basic thing for us is to go from a solid situation where we don’t make many mistakes behind, because when you make mistakes behind, sometimes you concede goals and other times you lose confidence.”
