Lecturers in the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) have embarked on indefinite hunger strike to protest the non-payment of their salaries for four months.
The hunger strike which began on Wednesday was announced by chairman of the CRUTECH branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Stephen Ochang.
Ochang who made the announcement following a decision reached by the lecturers said “the strike will last until when all our salary arrears are paid.”
He disclosed that the union at its congress held in Calabar decided to embark on the action to draw government’s attention to their plight.
“Congress reviewed the situation in the Branch and condemned in very strong terms the non-payment of salaries in the university for four months against the backdrop that civil/public servants have been paid up to date,” Ochang said.
