Former Real Madrid star, Antonio Cassano has said that Cristiano Ronaldo is football’s version of tennis great Rafael Nadal, while Lionel Messi is more like Roger Federer, insisting the latter is the best player in history.
The argument continues to rage over which of the footballers is the best in the world seeing that both have dominated world football for close to a decade leaving the rivalry ever hot and keen.
While Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or in each of the last two seasons and three times overall, his achievement is somewhat overshadowed by Messi won four successive crowns previously.
The former Italy international backed Mesi who he believes to be the best player ever.
“Messi is the greatest in the history of football. Many say that Diego Maradona did more to win a World Cup, but those were different times,” he told Italia 1. “Leo is the best, and that’s why I named my son after him.
“He and Ronaldo are two great players, but different. If we compare it to tennis, Ronaldo is like Nadal, Messi is Federer.”
Having won La Liga on Sunday, Barcelona now stand the chance of claiming the European and domestic treble this season when they take on Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final and then Juventus in the Champions League.
Cassano believes Barca have the upper hand, he feels Massimiliano Allegri’s men have a chance of winning their own treble at the Spanish side’s expense.
“Allegri was widely criticised when he arrived in the summer, but he is doing a great job. To beat Barcelona is going to be difficult, but anything can happen in a final,” the former Italy man said.
The ex-Roma star revealed that he has rejected Juve several times before, with the most recent approach coming at the start of this year.
“I told them ‘no’ four times – in January I was also close.”
