There were dramatic scenes at the floor of the Nigerian Senate this afternoon as PDP members of the house staged a walk out in protest of the confirmation of former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, as minister.
The PDP senators’ grouse was that the Committee on Ethics & Privileges report on the petition against Amaechi’s confirmation as a minister ought to have been properly debated by the house before he was confirmed.
One of the recommendation of the committee was that the Senate should not confirm Amaechi as a Minister because he has corruption charges subsisting against him, adding that the former governor should go and clear his name at the Court of Appeal and that President Buhari should nominate another person from Rivers state to take his place.
APC senators, however, said that since it was a matter for the Appeal court, it does not affect Amaechi’s confirmation and that the committee report should not be adopted by the house.
This position did not go down well with their PDP counterparts who, led by the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, promptly staged a walk out of the chambers.
Following the walk out by the PDP Senators, the Senate confirmed Amaechi and 17 other nominees as Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
They are Adebayo Shittu, Khadija Ibrahim, Heineken Lokpobiri, Cladius Daramola, Baba Mustapha, Ocholi James, Adewole Folorunso, and Bawa Bwari.
Others are Geoffrey Onyeama, Zainab Ahmed, Mohammed Dan Ali, Usani Uguru, Okechukwu Enelamah, Anwuka Gozie, Mohammed Bello, Adamu Adamu and Aisha Abubakar.
