The average government establishment in Nigeria is usually seen as a harsh inhuman set-up established to milk or frustrate the life of citizens. Ask any Nigerian to tell you about any government-owned set-up and what you will hear are words like: incompetent, inefficient, bottlenecks, corruption and very poor customer service.
But the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission official twitter account is bucking against the stereotype. Whoever is behind the account surely deserves a pat on the back for giving us proof that government can actually have a human face after all.
For the uninitiated, EFCC is a Nigerian law enforcement agency that investigates financial crimes such as advance fee fraud (419 fraud) and money laundering.
The EFCC twitter handle has endeared itself to Nigerians with its good sense of humour and witty replies to tweets, showing other government agencies how to actually improve on Public Relations yet still doing its job.
With this kind of approach, the EFCC (at least on twitter) has made it comfortable for people to engage with the agency and easier for people to approach them for information or inquiries.
Although comebacks or clapbacks are not uncommon on the Nigerian social media sphere, the EFCC is blazing a trail for other Nigerian government-owned institutions.
See some of the EFCC’s hilarious tweets below:
