6-year-old Nigerian commediane, Emmanuella Samuel, is part of the evolution of a new species of celebrities- influential and trendsetting non-hollywood types, whose appeal lies not in a notorious family name or the allure of a leaked sex tape, but in content that’s both fascinating and relevant.
In an industry where most comedians have been practising the craft for several years before they have their big break, Emmanuella has practically become the much needed breathe of fresh air.
Since breaking into the consciousness of Nigerians when she appeared in the Mark Angel Comedy skit “This is not my real face oo”, she has gone on to feature in several skits and has become a household name.
Already, via her appearances in comedy skits from the stable of Mark Angel Comedy, Emmanuella is ranked by Google as one of Nigeria’s top-ranked YouTube users, with over 280 thousand subscribers and views regularly exceeding 3 million.
Her influence and reputation stretches beyond the shores of Nigeria as she has already been featured on CNN as Africa’s youngest most popular comedienne on the internet. She has also been crowned Princess of Comedy by the Australian government.
If there are any doubts that the fresh-faced kid, who started comedy when she was still in Primary 1, is here for the long haul all one needs as evidence is her repertoire of works.
Apart from featuring in over 50 Mark Angel Comedy productions, Emmanuella has also made her international film debut in a movie “Survive”, and was a special guest of honour at the recently concluded Afro-Australian Music and Movie Awards (AAMMA) held in Sydney, Australia, where she bagged two awards.
Each MarkAngel video features Emmanuella doing or saying something utterly outrageous, just like every child her age. Her witty comebacks have put the Mark Angel team’s skits firmly on the map, but her surprising acting talent, which includes her arsenal of interesting facial expressions, is the cherry on the cake. When the script calls for a straight face, for example, Emmanuella puts up one like a poker player and when it’s time for a frown.
On Emmanuella’s talent Mark Angel said “When Emmanuella was born, we realised she was capable of being influenced positively. She did everything she was told to do even though she was really young. Also, we realised that she was talented. We simply groomed her and introduced her to showbiz.”
He said it has not been easy grooming her, “It takes a lot of patience to work with children. She has the tendency to skip her lines but she still comes back to it. Every now and then, we end up not achieving anything when we go to shoot. Anytime she does not get anything right, I just let her be or let her sleep. I do not know how it happens but whenever she wakes up from sleep, she gets everything right. “
Away from video skits, Emmanuella has also performed on the big stage with many of the best known names in the industry including African Legends, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Eddie Kadi, and has performed in several countries across the world including the UK.
Despite her fame as a commedianne, Emmanuella says she wants to be a make-up artiste and loves fashion.
She has since gone mainstream and has met a lot of big names in the entertainment industry, she is loved by; Actresses, singers, comedians and even popular business moguls. Mark Angel 2016 world tour showed the little comedian is popular not just in Nigeria but in many African countries.
Emmanuella has shown she is not a flash in the pan and in her Nigeria has got a shining star whose lights will shine for many years to come. Go girl!
