Arsene Wenger has admitted he wants Arsenal to be better after he leaves the club, indicating that he will be the Gunners’ “biggest supporter”.
The club have won the Premier League three times during Wenger’s reign but have not lifted the trophy since 2004, with their recent triumphs instead limited to the FA Cup, which the north Londoners won in both 2014 and 2015.
And, speaking ahead of the club’s match with Norwich City – with Arsenal now mathematically ruled out of the title race – Wenger has responded to fan disharmony and calls for him to resign, suggesting the Gunners can prosper when he eventually leaves due to his work at the club.
“I wish when I go the club goes higher up and wins the Champions League and championship every year,” the Frenchman told a media conference.
“I will be the biggest supporter in the stand because I will feel i have contributed to that.
“You have to remember when we built the stadium, we had five to seven difficult financial years. We had to be three years in the Champions League and have a 54,000 average attendance.
“We had to sell our best players and survive. And we didn’t do three years out of five, we did five years out of five. During that time it was very competitive.”
Wenger has also aired his own frustration at Arsenal’s failure to launch a prolonged challenge for the Premier League title, with Leicester City and Tottenham the only clubs now able to be crowned champions this season.
“It is very frustrating as we were in the position for a long, long time to compete for the title,” he added. “We won the FA Cup twice and the Community Shield and wanted to go one step up and win the league and that is why we are frustrated.
“I can understand the frustration because nobody is more frustrated than we are. Our disappointment has not to go too far.”
