Captain of the Super Eagles, John Obi Mikel has been handed a new role by coach of Chelsea Antonio Conte.
Conte is reportedly willing to play him further up the field to convince him to extend his Stamford Bridge stay.
The 29-year-old linked up with the Blues 10 years ago having emerged with Norwegian outfit Lyn.
And they beat off competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United to secure his services.
Rather than develop into the box-to-box midfielder he was expected to though, Mikel has largely been deployed in a deeper role.
In contrast, he operates as a playmaker for the Nigerian national team.
But Conte is apparently offering to utilise him in that position in order to entice him into agreeing a new deal in west London.
That’s according to OwnGoalNigeria, who were told by a source close to the player: “Mikel and Conte had a chat about his role in the team, although he has been assured he will be played in the role that suits him the more by the manager.
“He is also ready to fill in anywhere he is needed for the team.”
Mikel has just a year left to run on his current contract, hence Chelsea’s move to tie him down.
