There are strong indications that President Muhammadu Buhari has finally sent his ministerial list to the senate for screening and approval. According to reports gathered, Buhari’s ministerial list is ready and the Saraki-led senate will get a letter from the presidency requesting approval of nominees either on Tuesday or Wednesday.

It will be recalled that two weeks ago, the Department of State Service (DSS) screened some nominees including former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, popular human rights activist Femi Falana (SAN), former National Legal Adviser to the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, Abubakar Malami (SAN), renowned economist, Prof. Pat Utomi. This was done in line with Buhari’s May 29 promise to inaugurate his cabinet before the end of September.

Also, the John Oyegun-led All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday held an emergency meeting with National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar and other top leaders in attendance to discuss pressing APC issues including the ministerial list.

There were also indications that some ministerial nominees failed the integrity test before them during screening.

According to one report, while still at the UN General Assembly Buhari had sent one of his National Assembly Liaison Officers, Senator Ita Enang, to hand the ministerial list to the senate for confirmation.

Reacting to this, Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina said, “I will not be surprised if the list is ready because it is within the timeline that the President gave. He said he would name his cabinet in September. Today (Monday) is September 28, so if it happens that it is ready, it is within the timeline.”

On the issue of ‘balancing the cabinet’ to reflect federal character, Adesina stated, “The constitution already gives you an idea of the number of people that can be on the cabinet because it stipulates that we must have at least one minister per state.”
