Four Burning Issues National Assembly Needs To Attend To As Legislature Resumes After Lengthy Break [OPEN]

Members of Nigeria’s National Assembly, on Tuesday, resumed their legislative duties at the Senate and the House of Representatives after a prolonged break. recalls that the National Assembly had declared its annual recess which began July 24 and although the federal lawmakers were initially expected to resume on Sept. 25, the resumption was postponed to Oct. 9.

According to Mohammed Sani-Omolori, the Clerk of the Assembly, who announced the postponement in a statement on Sunday, Sept. 23, the postponement was due to the primary elections of political parties.

As the National Assembly resumes, here are four issues that urgently needs their attention:

1. The lawmakers need to deliberate on the request by President Muhammadu Buhari on the Supplementary Budget to provide for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other sources of funding which was still before them.

2. The National Assembly also have to consider the Electoral Amendment Bill that would ensure the proper mode and method of conducting the 2019 elections.

3. The legislature also need to look into the request President Buhari had laid before the lawmakers for borrowing to fund the 2018 Budget from the various windows before they went on vacation.

4. The National Assembly also need to deliberate on other issues relating to fighting corruption, economy, including approving appointments made by the executive.
