Officers of the Department of State Services, DSS, in Akwa Ibom on Wednesday arrested a security officer with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, who threatened to kill the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Mr. Austin Okojie, as he is now in police custody.
Mr. Asuquo David, the security officer was said to have been arrested after an investigation into the save our soul (SOS) alert sent by the chief electoral officer in the state penultimate week, alleging threat to his life and members of his family through phone calls and text messages by an anonymous caller.
The said security staff, who destroyed the SIM card used for the alleged acts, confessed to the DSS that his act was only to prey and feast on the REC.
He also expressed surprise that his ploy did not only fail, but had put him in a mess.
David, therefore, pleaded for forgiveness from his boss and the authorities of INEC and DSS.
Reporting on its findings the DSS said: “The outcome of the investigation revealed the identity of the user of the threat lines as Asuquo Etim David of the Departmental Security Officer, DSO, of INEC, Akwa Ibom State.
“Consequently, David was arrested.
“He said his action was driven by financial expectations from the chief electoral officer shortly after the 2015 general elections, which were never fulfilled.”
