Atletico Madrid coach, Diego Simeone has called Jose Gimenez tackle of Real Sociedad forward, Jonathas, in the penalty area “an act of heroism”.
Simeone defended his player’s challenge, saying that Gimenez touched the ball and not the player. The injury time penalty call by Sociedad as the scores stood at 1-0 in favour of Atleti was waved, and the away team launched a counter-attack that resulted in a second goal.
Antoine Griezmann has earlier sent the visitors into the lead with a 9th minute goal.
Simeone said, “The truth is that from the bench we were far away from it. But I was told that he [Gimenez] hit the ball when he threw himself over in an act of heroism.
“The referee saw that he touched the ball and not the player. The [opposition] player was looking for contact in a heroic act by Gimenez.”
Atletico Madrid now lies in fourth on the La Liga log, two points behind Real Madrid, Celta Vigo and Barcelona.
