There was panic among Guardians and Parents of Hassan Ibrahim Gwarzo private Boarding school, Kano, yesterday after some mysterious persons were believed to have broken into the premises of the school to sexually assault the students.
According to a report aired by a Kano based private radio on Wednesday’s night, some students of the school were reported to have been carnally abused by unknown perpetrators.
One of the allegedly assaulted boys (name withheld), whose voice was aired by the radio station, confirmed that he was sexually harassed by an unidentified person who covered his mouth and forcefully sodomised him.
The student further confirmed that another JSS 3 student also informed him that somebody has been assaulting him sexually since his first year in the school.
Hajiya Halima Muhammad, a mother who spoke to newsmen at the school shortly after she met with her two children that were schooling there, said that her children, JSS1 and SS3 students, have confirmed to her that cases of sexual harassment do happened in the school.
She said: “I will not take away my children from the school because such cases do happen in most schools including day schools and I don’t want to run away from bad to worst. I will rather leave them here and continue to pray for them.”
But Hajiya Maimuna Sa’idu Bello, another visitor to the school said: “if not because my husband has directed me to wait until he comes back, I will right away go home with my children today (yesterday). From what I observed the school authority is hiding something and only investigation can unveil the truth of the matter.”
Mrs. Bello therefore called on government and the police to conduct thorough investigation on the matter with a view to salvaging the students, parents and even the school authority by revealing the truth of the whole issue.
Meanwhile, the Kano state Government has closed down the college to defuse tension.
Acting Governor of the state, Professor Hafiz Abubakar has directed the Private and secondary schools Board to sealed the college immediately to pave way for investigation.
Professor Hafiz Abubakar further announced a 14 member committee under the leadership of Professor Abubakar Mustapha to investigate the allegations and turn in their report within two weeks.
Similarly, the police in Kano has also launched a full blown criminal inquest to unravel the mystery surrounding the sexual assault in male dominated boarding school.
The Public Relations officer, Kano Police Command told Reporters in Kano on Friday that one of the victim was receiving treatment at Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital.
