I Hate Chimamanda! – By StyleVitae
Fashion and intellectuals haven’t always been chummy pals, as the former has traditionally been considered the cultural domain of lesser mortals like recording artists and less intellectual celebrities.
It’s a sphere that has been kept at arms length by public intellectuals, but African writers have no problem breaking the stereotype bred by their European counterparts. We have geniuses like Teju cole known for his Ikire Jones scarves and Alain Mabanckou’s dapper style is only surpassed by his scribbling prowess.
However, in a pond of stylish African intellectuals Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche has been the most vocal about the love and contradictions of exploring the intersections between the public intellectual life and a love for fashion. She fuses being a fashion lover and novelist, as well as a figure for feminists ideals and politics very perfectly and I hate her for it.
I Hate Chimamanda for her thoughtfully put together stylish combinations and ardent devotion to promoting ‘Made in Nigeria’ pieces. Her personal style is fast becoming an inspiration to other women equally enthusiastic about style, but not in the least interested in Nigerian designers. I mean, If it’s good enough for Chimamanda of epic grace and taste, then it’s good enough for them.
If Chimamanda Adichie’s journey to becoming an Instagram fashion star has taught me anything, it’s that style like any other mode of self expression requires passion.
