Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he hopes David De Gea stays at the club this summer, but could make no guarantees.
De Gea’s proposed transfer to Real Madrid has been on the card all summer, and with no deal in sight he made his first appearance of pre-season in United’s 3-1 victory against Barcelona on Saturday.
The Spanish international played an hour at the Levi’s Stadium, California, denying Barca’s Sergi Roberto when through one-on-one in the first half, and earned effusive praise from his manager.
“In spite of his injury – he doesn’t train for one week – he showed his quality in this game,” van Gaal told reporters.
“The first chance was for Barcelona and when you stop the first chance you can score the first goal – what we have done also – and that is always a difference in the game.
“Yes of course I do hope De Gea shall stay, but in this world of football you never know.”
