President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism that his administration will defeat the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East and other parts of Nigeria. Buhari spoke confidently that the December deadline for the end of terrorism in Nigeria given to the Nigerian Army and the Joint Military Task Force (JMTF) was feasible.
President Muhammadu Buhari made these remarks in an interview he granted Al Jazeera’s Mehdi Hassan on “Upfront”.
Buhari spoke on the issue of Boko Haram terrorism, the kidnapped Chibok girls and other kidnapped persons in the North East.
Buhari while speaking on the kidnapped Chibok girls did not rule out the option of negotiating with the Boko Haram terrorists, even if it meant financial inducement to the insurgents.
Buhari said, “They have to prove to us that they are alive; they are well, and then we can negotiate with them. We said it and we meant it. If we are satisfied that the girls are alive.”
On the issue of offering payments to the Boko Haram terrorists for the release of the kidnapped Chibok girls, Buhari said, “Well it depends on the negotiations with the leadership of Boko Haram.”
However, President Buhari expressed confidence that his administration will wipe out Boko Harm insurgency by December saying, “As soon as the rainy season comes, which is by the end of the year; Boko Haram will virtually be out of their main stronghold and that will be the end of it.”
Although, he added that if the Boko Haram terrorists are not wiped out before the deadline, he was not going to resign his office as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“I will be determined to stay and fight it out.”
Also, President Buhari claimed that he had not being officially handed the Amnesty International report detailing the human rights abuses in the fight against terrorism in the North East.
“I haven’t received that report personally. If I get those documents, I assure you that I will take action as Commander in Chief.”
