An elderly man has set himself on fire outside the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, South Korea, as part of a terrifying protest.

The South Korean man, reported to be aged 81 by local media, staged the incident to demand an apology from Tokyo for forcing women into brothels during World War II.

Horrific photos show the man completely engulfed in flames, his hands clasped above his head as if in prayer.

A South Korean woman can be seen trying to extinguish the flames using a purple blanket as other protesters watch on in horror.

Another man then stepped into help put out the self-inflicted fire on the protester.

The elderly man was attended to by fire fighters at the scene before being carried away on a stretcher covered in a blue blanket.

Thousands of demonstrators marched the streets of Seoul on Wednesday holding brightly coloured signs and yellow butterfly-shaped posters.

‘It’s shame not to admit a crime’, read one of the posters written in English.

During the second world war many Korean women were forced into prostitution, often after being abducted from their homes.

They were then sent to places known as ‘comfort stations’, and these women were used to service the Japanese Imperial Army.

The extent of the injuries suffered by the 81-year-old protesting is not known.
