Nigeria Nears First Rio 2016 Gold Medal, As Ukogu Makes Rowing Event Semis [READ]

There are chances that Nigeria might get her first gold medal in the on-going Rio 2016 Olympics as American-born Nigerian rower Chierika Ukogu has qualified for the semi-finals of the Women’s Single Sculls Rowing event.

Ukogu finished fifth in Quarterfinal 3, and although she was initially ruled to have been knocked out, the officials called her back, based on some technicalities.

She will now compete in Semifinal C/D 1 scheduled for Thursday, August 10, 3:30PM (Nigerian time).

23-Year-old Chierika Ukogu is a graduate of Stanford University who qualified to represent Nigeria at the summer Games in Brazil during the 2015 FISA African Olympic Qualification Regatta made history by becoming the country’s first rower at the Olympics.

Ukogu was grouped alongside two other Africans in her quarter final race, one of them, Rouba Amina from Algeria, also progressed to the semifinals.

Ahead of the event, she said it had always been her ultimate goal to be the first Nigerian to row at the Olympic Games.
