An angry mob had on Monday, November 7, 2016 descended on a soldier and battered him for reportedly stealing an iPhone belonging to a woman at gunpoint in Warri.
The unidentified soldier committed the act at the popular Robson G. Shopping plaza, along Okumagba Avenue in Warri, Delta State.
It was learnt that the soldier who was armed with a knife and dressed in military camouflage made an attempt to escape from the scene but he was not as lucky as the mob engaged him in a hot chase.
They later caught him near Olodi Primary School, where they gave him the beating of his life until he bled.
But for the intervention of mobile policemen on guard at the shopping plaza, the mob would have lynched the soldier.
The mobile policemen escorted him to the residence of former Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. David Ejoor to confirm if he was truly a personnel of the Nigerian Army.
The Army personnel on Guard at Maj. Gen. David Ejoor’s residence dispersed the angry mob and refused to hand over the unidentified soldier to police officers from the Nigeria Police Force ‘B’ Division in Warri.
An Army van later came and whisked the soldier away to the Nigerian Army Barrack, 3 Battalion, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area.
As at the time of filing this report, the Army is yet to confirm if the unidentified officer is a personnel of the Nigerian Army.
However, an anonymous source within the Barracks said: “We could not question the unidentified officer; he has been referred to the hospital as a result of the injuries he sustained from the angry mob.”
