Some unknown gunmen have gunned down a Police Inspector attached to a Chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo, Chief Marcellinus Nlemigbo, at Umudagu, Mberi, in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The deceased inspector identified only as Mr Ogbe, was at Chief Nlemigbo’s compound at Umudagu when the gunmen arrived at about 8 p.m on Sunday.
A source close to the APC chieftain disclosed to journalists in Owerri that a gun battle ensued between the assassins and the deceased officer before they finally killed him.
The source added that Chief Nlemigbo, who had just returned from the October Lecture of the Grail Movement, Nigeria, in Owerri, was inside his house when the exchange of gunfire took place.
The reason behind the attack by the gunmen still remains a mystery as at press time, but it was gathered that one of the politician’s drivers disappeared since that day.
Chief Nlemigbo, who is also a former Chairman of PDP in the state, told newsmen that the police were investigating the incident.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident.
He said: “The police are using all machinery at their disposal to unravel those behind the incident.”
