The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is far from over. Following a court order halting the party’s planned national convention in Rivers today, policemen have sealed the venue of the convention.
Speaking during a programme on Channels Television titled, ‘Sunrise Daily’, the Nigerian Police Public Relations Officer, Donald Awunah from the Force headquarters said the convention venue was sealed off to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
According to a report by Punch Newspaper, the police spokesman said that due to the tension surrounding the convention and the conflicting court rulings, the police thought it best to seal off the venue.
“The warring parties need to follow due process to end their crisis through the courts and as a law enforcement agency what do you do? You ensure that there is a superior court order. It is not about taking sides.
“If in the next one hour or two, we get another court order, we will take action. We are there for every Nigerian but when you are the first responder, you have to take action, you have to be proactive,” he said.
Ali Modu sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi remain in a bitter dispute over the leadership of the party. Ali Modu Sheriff who was the National chairman claims that he was illegally removed and insists he remains chairman.
Ahmed Makarfi’s caretaker committee, on the other hand, insists that it is the rightful leadership of the party and went ahead to call a convention.
A month ago, a Federal high court ruling declared the Ahmed Makarfi committee unconstitutional and a court order by Justice Okon Abang halted the convention on Tuesday after a High court gave Makarfi’s committee the go-ahead earlier in the same day.
Confirming the new development, the Peoples Democratic Party’s direction of new media, Deji Adeyanju, took to his social media to blast the President Buhari-led federal government and the opposition party for being responsible.
“Cannot believe that the @PdpNigeria crisis has taken a new dimension. President BUHARI orders Military/Police to block Convention venue.
“Interesting. The desperation to crush @PdpNigeria by the Federal Government is laughable.
I can confirm to Nigerians that the @APCNigeria led Federal Government have blocked all roads leading to our convention venue in PH.
“The @APCNigeria Federal Government should leave us to handle our internal party issues instead of now jumping in the ring. SMH,” Deji said.
