PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULT: Third Force Candidates Sowore, Moghalu, Durotoye, Donald Duke Missing From Top Five [BREAKDOWN]

Fela Durotoye, Kingsley Moghalu and Omoyele Sowore failed to present a united front in the 2019 presidential election.

The 2019 presidential election has come and gone with results collated and announced early on Wednesday morning by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the Chief Returning officer and INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 56 percent equivalent to 15,191,847 votes to beat his closest rival Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who received 41 percent or 11, 262,978 million of the votes.

Recall that there had been much talk about a “Third Force” in the weeks and days leading up to the elections. The third force are the first time contestants and younger candidates of the over 70 remaining political parties outside of the top two of APC and PDP.

Popular among the third force candidates were Kingsley Moghalu of Young Progressives Party (YPP), Fela Durotoye of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC) and Donald Duke of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Analysis of the election results by however revealed that none of these third force candidates made a serious dent to the numbers polled by the leading political parties or came third in the final tally.

INEC’s result shows that the candidate of the Peoples Coalition Party (PCP) Dr. Nicolas Felix came a distant third behind President Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

It is interesting to note that few days before the election was rescheduled, Dr. Felix together with the presidential candidate of All Grassroot Alliance (AGA), Barrister Chucks Nwachuku, had officially declared his support for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The endorsement however did not stop the PCP from polling impressive figures especially when compared with the numbers of the popular third force candidates.

On their part, the popular third force candidates fared much worse than the PCP as Donald Duke polled 34,746 (ninth), Omoyele Sowore 33,953 (tenth), Kingsley Moghalu (fourteenth) and Fela Durotoye 16,779 (seventeenth) votes as all failed to make it into the top five.
