Amidst the countless issues facing Nigeria today, poisonous foods, drugs and drinks should really come last on the list of things that Nigerians have to deal with given the place of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, in the society.
Since 1993, NAFDAC has been saddled with the responsibility of regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals and packaged water in Nigeria.
Yet, the numbers of Nigerians who die to the cold hands of fake and expired drugs, foods and drinks have been on the increase.
Just yesterday, March 2017, we told you how NAFDAC was fined N1 million after a High court in Lagos ruled against it over a case between the agency and a bottling company in Nigeria for failing in its duties to safe guard Nigerians.
“It is manifest that NAFDAC has been grossly irresponsible in its regulatory duties to the consumers of Fanta and Sprite manufactured by Nigeria Bottling Company. In my respective view, NAFDAC has failed the citizens of this great nation by its certification as satisfactory for human consumption, products which in the United Kingdom failed sample test for human consumption and which become poisonous in the presence of Ascorbic Acid ordinarily known as Vitamin C, which can be freely taken by the unsuspecting public with the company’s Fanta or Sprite,” read more.
Again, currently trending, is a YouTube video that shows some angry Nigerians destroying property in a particular packaged water (pure water) factory where a cockroach was allegedly found in the filter of the packaged water machine.
These are of course just a few scenarios where NAFDAC as well as other wicked Nigerians risk the lives of others through their activities.
Through negligence, NAFDAC has exposed Nigerians to unhealthy water where thousands have died of Dysentery, Diarrhea, Hepatitis A, Lead Poisoning and Malaria among many other related diseases.
NAFDAC has to improve in its leadership role of safe guarding the Nigerian child as far as what he consumes is concerned.
It is sad how we pay attention to things that do not really matter in Nigeria more than that which should mean everything to us.
To achieve an improved NAFDAC, Nigerians also have to show their support by fighting this criminal activities in the country.
