Have you ever needed to rent your own house and couldn’t find one either because you didn’t liked the ones you found or the price of the one you got is way above your head that you had to resigned to fate and make do with squatting with a relative? If yes, you are in great company as most people who are just starting out and needed their own comfortable space have also had to deal with the same struggle
The solution? A dream housemate who would split both the stress and the rent.
That’s where Roomies Connect, a startup that helps connect people to the right housemates and roommates in an easy, fun way comes in.
Founder of Roomies Connect, Thelma Chukwu believes that there are millions of people looking to rent apartments and perhaps with the right person to share that cost with (renting a 2+ bedroom could be relatively cheaper than renting a one bedroom), you could get the house or apartment of your dreams.
Speaking on how she got the inspiration for the idea, Thelma told Konbini:
“When I moved to Lagos, I was staying with my cousin and couldn’t wait to be independent. I looked around for a good 1-bed apartment, however most of the apartments I saw were all on the high side. It was cheaper for me to get a 2-bedroom apartment and look for a flat mate”
“However, after a wild-goose chase I had to save more and get the 1 bed. This experience coupled with other experiences from my friends made me realize this was definitely a problem to be solved.”
Thelma has previous experience working on DCM shopper, an investigative service that helped companies evaluate and monitor their customer service personnel without their knowledge, an experience that came in handy when she started her own company.
Roomies Connect currently has a team of four including a Developer, a Digital Marketing Strategist and a Server expert; and the startup now has over 4,000 registered users and is operating in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. They plan to expand to South Africa next month.
Here’s how it works
Just visit the Roomies Connect website, and sign up. After verification, you can browse through the database of registered roommates to search for someone like you. Their proprietary algorithm will match your personality, lifestyle and preferences with other prospective roommates.
If you find someone or people you like, click the “Like” button on the profiles of those you are interested in and if it’s mutual, they will “Like” back which creates a “Match”. If a potential roomie likes you, you receive a notification and they will be added to your likes page giving you enough time to decide if think they fit your specifications.
You can then contact potential flat mates directly and safely via the in-product chat, without sharing your contact details yet.
The startup hopes to launch a mobile App for IOS and Android platforms, and include more features to the product. By the end of the year, Roomies Connect hopes to reached 100,000 registered members – and helped them find their dream housemates. They’ll also be expanding to Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
