A team of five doctors were frightened as they removed about 40 knives from the stomach of a 42-year-old man during a near-death five hour-long surgery.
One of the doctors, Dr Jatinder Malhotra, said that the Indian man had a strange medical condition which comes with the urge to consume metal.
Malhoytra said: “He had a wild urge to consume metal. Even for us, the experienced surgeons, it was frightening. We were so nervous because a small mistake could have taken the patient’s life.
“In my 20 years of practice, I have never seen anything like it. He [the patient] says he swallowed some knives folded, and some unfolded. When we took out the knives, some were found folded, some were open, and some had even started rusting and were broken.”
The visibly sorry patient who spoke with CNN apologized for letting his family down and immensely thanked the doctors for saving his life.
He said: “I’m sorry I let my family down. I’ll be forever thankful to doctors and hospital staff for saving my life, I don’t know why I used to swallow knives. I just enjoyed its taste and I was addicted how people get addicted to alcohol and other things, my situation was similar. I will never do such acts ever again, I’m a new person now.”
Meanwhile, he is currently out of danger but still under the continuous supervision of the hospital’s in-house psychiatric team and will soon be visited by independent mental health experts.
“We don’t know the exact reason but it seems like he was suffering from some kind of physiological disorder. Even his family didn’t know about his habit of swallowing knives.
“He is getting counselling. He has promised that he will never touch a knife again, but his family will have to monitor him,” the doctor added.
