The union of 29 years between Ryan Giggs and Manchester United is set to end with increased speculations that Jose Mourinho wants to replace the Old Trafford Cult Hero with Rui Faria.
Sources have told Sportsmail that the Manchester United legend is actively seeking his first managerial role and Nottingham Forest might be his destination. The Scott has been heavily linked with the vacant Nottingham Forest post, although it is understood that Steve Evans, who rejected the Oldham Athletic job on Tuesday, is a strong contender to take over at the City Ground despite reports the club are looking abroad for a new coach.
Should the Welshman not be taken by Forest, his options in this country would appear to be limited. A move to cash-strapped League One Oldham is unlikely, as is a move to Premier League Southampton and Giggs may well be forced to look abroad.
A further option would be to bide his time into the new season, with managerial casualties before Christmas commonplace, although his United future would have to be resolved before then.
United have not publicly given up on retaining Giggs although privately senior officials believe it is unlikely he will stay.
The arrival of Jose Mourinho has pushed the former winger, who enjoyed a glittering career with the club, to the exit door.
Giggs, who served as assistant to both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, will be replaced as No 2 by Mourinho’s trusted lieutenant Rui Faria.
United told the 42–year-old to come up with his own role, with an emphasis placed on creating a pathway from the club’s youth team to the first team.
That would appear to be some way short of Giggs’s expectations, given he was beaten to the managerial role by both Van Gaal and Mourinho.
Giggs has a year remaining on his contract with United.
