Arsenal forward, Alex Iwobi; Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho and Al Nasr of Saudi Arabia winger, Ahmed Musa will lead Nigeria’s revenge mission at the FNB Stadium on Saturday when they take on the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The trio and eight other members of Gernot Rohr’s 23-man team who were expected to land in Johannesburg in the early hours of Friday were in the June 10,2017 squad that set an unwanted record of being the first Nigerian team to lose to South Africa in a competitive game.
South Africa came to the Akwa Ibom International Stadium Uyo,saw and conquered with two second half goals scored by Tokelo Rantie and Percy Muzi Tau.
Iheanacho is well aware of the need to make amends with a success of a revenge mission albeit their names will never be forgotten whenever the history of games between Nigeria and South Africa is to be told.
Interestingly, Chippa United goalie, Daniel Akpeyi who will likely be between the sticks in this mission was in goal on that fateful evening in Uyo with William Troost-Ekong, Oghenekaro Etebo, Iwobi, Iheanacho, Moses Simon starting while Victor Osimhen came in as an 85th minute substitute for Simon.
Golakeeper – Ikechukwu Ezenwa; defender, Kenneth Omeruo, midfielder Mikel Agu and forward, Ahmed Musa were unused substitutes in that game.
For Rohr, a win for Nigeria will not only seal their passage to Cameroun 2019 for the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations, it will also be sweet revenge mission accomplished as the Bafana Bafana gave him his first loss as manager of the Super Eagles.
