Coaches for the Super Eagles have been in a mad scramble to find a suitable replacement for the Wolves’ goalkeeper Carl Ikeme. News of Ikeme’s acute leukemia diagnosis was made known last July. It became clear that it would take a special player to assume his position so the search was on. A survey shows Nigerians want Enyeama in goal for Super Eagles in Ikeme’s stead.
The player chosen for goal keeper during the Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers was Ikechukwu Ezenwa. During play his numbers were good. While during open play he didn’t concede any goal, he appeared to lack judgment in decision making for certain games. It seemed to be a hit and miss situation. His overall performance prompted a public call for retired goal keeper Vincent Enyeama to return to the position with the team.
Enyeama’s likelihood of return
Enyeama retired with a long hiatus due to a knee injury. Fans of the sport are thinking about the upcoming 2018 World Cup in Russia and they want to have a solid player that they trust in place. This is particularly true for those who are looking forward to place wagers on the game. With so many options for sports betting, there’s a good chance for winning big on reputable sites offering signup bonuses like the Bet9ja Promotion code that puts funding into new accounts.
The Guardian recently conducted a poll that showed out of 807 respondents, 54.67 percent chose Enyeama as the best choice for the World Cup tournament. Even though he wasn’t a contender at Lille, fans showed the most confidence in his abilities. Although there was initial enthusiasm about the possibility of Enyeama’s return, coach Gernot Rohr nixed the proposal by making his play time an issue that would prevent the return. He’s not willing to take the chance on a player that has been out for so long for the upcoming Russian tournament.
It was Rohr who chose Ezenwa as replacement for Ikeme. When it came to popularity with fans, only twenty percent favored him as the best choice for goalkeeper. Even more desirable, was Francis Uzoho, who topped the polls with a twenty-two percent approval rate. The major reason listed for respondent disapproval of Ezenwa was his goal tending skills, which they believed were not up to par.
Could Uzoho be the next star?
According to the public, the 19 year old Uzoho who has only spent 180 minutes playing in top tier football is a player they have confidence in over Ezenwa. The rookie played with Deportivo La Coruna ass well as for the Super Eagles in just three games. He’s spent most of him time in a reserve team of the Deportivo Fabril which is a component of Deportivo de La Coruna, of Spain. He managed to keep a clean sheet with the Super Eagles, but he wasn’t able to stop Mitrovic from scoring in a match against Poland. Although he’s on his way up, Uzoho hasn’t been playing long and he’s not yet achieved the experience to give fans a high amount of confidence, hence, the twenty-two percent approval rate.
It’s not looking positive for any return by Enyeama. Rohr has kept his options open and is looking in other directions for the 2018 World Cup team completion. It’s not what the majority would like to see, but unless other strong options present themselves, it looks as though his first choice, Ezenwa may be the goalkeeper going to Russia in June.
