A 31-year-old housewife, Dorcas Tanko, has told an Upper Area Court in Karu that she would commit suicide if her divorce petition was refused.
Tanko, a mother of four and resident of Nyanyan, gave the threat when her petition for divorce came up for hearing on Tuesday.
The petitioner is seeking for the dissolution of her 17-year-old marriage to her husband, Adewale Muritala, 41, for alleged battery, threat to life, among others.
When she was asked by the court on Tuesday if she had changed her mind, she replied, “I will commit suicide if I go back to the marriage’’.
She also told the court that they had been living separately for months following a fight between them.
Judge Ibrahim Walliyyullahi had adjourned the matter on two occasions for family members to intervene and restore peace between the couple.
Walliyyullahi had also told the petitioner to come to court with a respected member of her family at the last adjourned date.
An elderly member of the petitioner’s family, David Aboki, who was present in court, said that all attempts of family members to change Tanko’s mind proved abortive.
Aboki told the court that Tanko informed members of the family that she had made up mind.
The respondent, Muritala still maintained that he needed his wife around to be the mother of his kids.
The mater was adjourned till Aug. 7, for ruling. (NAN)
