Arsenal coach, Arsene Wenger has expressed his sadness over football star, Alex Iwobi’s decision to play for Nigeria instead of England.
Remember Iwobi played for England at youth level before moving to Nigeria at senior level. Well, Wenger feels Iwobi should be playing for England instead.
Wenger said in January:
“He should be playing for England.”
Iwobi who had made seven appearances for England’s under-16s, three for the under-17s and one at under-18 level, by all accounts, was happily embedded in the set-up. But then the invitations stopped.
Wenger added :
“He played for the England youth teams for a while but when it came to the under-19s, they didn’t pick him.”
Iwobi in January this year, had also showed interest to play for England saying he would have “loved” to play but unfortunately FA did not make it happen prior to Nigeria’s match against Egypt this year which Iwobi took part.
Wenger stooped Iwobi from representing Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympics and the manager is one who is heavily opposed to the January timing of the Africa Cup Of Nations, which requires star players to leave during the business end of the season.
