The senate has passed a bill seeking to establish a University of Petroleum Resources in Effurun, Warri, Delta State.

Senate President Bukola Saraki on Thursday, July 14, 2016 signed a copy of the bill entitled, ‘A Bill for an Act for the Establishment of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun; and for Other Matters Connected Therewith (2016)’.

The bill which was sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, representing Delta Central on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been forwarded on to the House of Representatives for passage into an Act of the National Assembly.

Saraki said: “With a University of Petroleum Resources, we can boost our domestic capacity to train skilled graduates to further our petroleum industry.

“With the rapid and continuous restructuring of Nigeria’s petroleum industry, the bill was  borne out of the need for the legislature to develop long-term strategic ways of encouraging the proper management of our nation’s oil and gas resources.

“The University of Petroleum Resources will help develop strategies to manage Nigeria’s oil and gas resources.

“Hence, with the governance framework for the University of Petroleum Resources in place, Nigeria will have the domestic capacity to train skilled graduates with the technical ability to administer and further the demands of our petroleum industry. This is vital to our developmental objectives as a nation.

“This bill will be forwarded on to the House of Representatives for passage into an Act of the National Assembly.”

Recall that the senate recently received a pat on the back for passing a law to stop discrimination against people with disabilities for the third and final reading.

This was seen as an additional feather in the cap of the red chamber as similar bills aimed at protecting the rights of people with disabilities had previouly failed to get signed into law during the 6 (2007 to 2011) and 7th (2011 to 2015) Assemblies.
