The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives, on Wednesday, lamented the slow pace of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government and tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to hit the ground running.
This came just as the group declared that President Buhari had no power under the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to be selective in his government’s anti-corruption stance and statements.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, on Wednesday, chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee of the caucus, Honourable Rima Shawulu Pemu, however, assured that the PDP would support the APC government’s anti-corruption stance for the overall development of the country.
The group also assured that the party would not go into frivolous criticism of the ruling party, rather it would provide a credible opposition by working towards the deepening of democracy.
The group decried the vindictive and selective nature of President Buhari’s anti-corruption posture and statements, while pledging to support his ongoing war against graft by previous administrations in the country.
According to him, “the decision of President Buhari to restrict his probe to only Dr Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, rather than all previous administrations in Nigeria offends a section and letter of the constitution.
“Our position as a party is that the president, who was elected by Nigerians, has no power to be selective in the war against corruption,” he stated.
The caucus noted that government “is a continuum and that crime, no matter how long it was committed, remains a crime, unless the culprit has been apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
The spokesperson pointed out that the Port Harcourt, Kaduna and Warri refineries, out of four federally-owned refineries that are now working were due to the Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) initiated on these facilities by the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.
On APC’s anti-corruption stance, he stated that the party’s caucus played a significant role in the emergence of the Honourable Yakubu Dogara as Speaker and his deputy, Honourable Yusuff Lasun, stressing that almost all the bills and motions that had been passed by the eighth House of Representatives were sponsored by PDP lawmakers.
The group also said the Boko Haram sect had been decimated due to efforts by the Jonathan-led administration and insisted that it believed that all the previous administrations must be investigated and if found to be corrupt be also prosecuted by the APC-led Federal Government.
