He revealed that ‘those long nights in Copenhagen’ led the pair to strike up a solid bond, in an in-depth interview with the Aftenposten newspaper in his native Norway.

‘That gives you a kind of chemistry, a kind of closeness,’ he added.

‘She drinks white wine and I drink beer.

‘I am very impressed by her stamina. Let’s put it like this: she isn’t the first to leave.’

The former Norwegian prime minister remember one particular drinking session fondly, which took place at a German coastal town following a 1012 summit.

‘We had a very good evening in Stralsund,’ he laughed.

Both Stoltenberg and Merkel were elected as their countries’ leaders in 2005, given them an icebreaker to kick start their boozy sessions.

Stoltenberg added: ‘Obama is also someone I have met many times. I think it was those two who supported me as a candidate for [NATO] General Secretary.’

But in a touching side note, the NATO boss was keen to debunk the myth that it’s all business for the world leaders.

‘Political leaders are mainly sociable, nice people, otherwise they wouldn’t have been elected. It’s easy to make friends.’
